Australian Grenache’s time has come

Australian Grenache’s time has come – the colonists planted it back in the 1830’s and now even London’s The Times is recognising its merits.

Even London’s The Times is recognising its merits
“this luscious grape combines intensity of flavour with a lightness of texture”

If I asked you to name the grape variety Australia is most famous for, ten to one you’d say chardonnay or shiraz, perhaps followed by cabernet sauvignon or even pinot noir. But I doubt you would point to grenache, once the most planted variety in the country and one that is enjoying a resurgence in the UK.

Will Lyons in London’s The Times

Will Lyons in The Sunday Times headlined grenache as “Australia’s buzziest grape”. The Wine Australia website writes of the “Rebirth of an Australian Classic“. At glugwines we have long realised the merits.

Try these wines of ours to see why Will Lyons writes of how grenache works beautifully in a blend, particularly with shiraz and mourvèdre.

Glug Barossa Valley Shiraz Mataro Grenache NV – This Glug White Label then has a GI (geographical indicator) of Barossa Valley. To make the best wine possible we have blended wines of several vintages which makes the wine NV or non-vintage though all are recent vintages. $10.50 a bottle.

Harem ‘Layla’ Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2018 – Wines like Layla are part of the hidden genius of the Barossa. $ bottle.

Harem Rosita Barossa Valley Rose (Grenache Mataro) 2022 – Grenache is a variety which develops its highest potential in warm climates. Mataro is another variety that achieves its greatness in the Barossa Valley. Bring the two together in a Rose and we find magic is created. $21 a bottle.

Kitts Creek Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz 2018 – Grenache and Shiraz is a perfect combination. Grenache brings a softness and complex fragrance to the blend while Shiraz adds the boldness of fruit and colour plus the firm back palate grip. Like others we wonder if this is not the perfect blend for the Barossa. $13.80 a bottle.

Three Hares wine label
One of three different blns of grenache, mataro and shiraz

Three Hares No.1 Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2020; Three Hares No.2 Barossa Valley Mataro Grenache Shiraz 2020; Three Hares No.3 Barossa Valley Shiraz Mataro Grenache 2020 For the 2020 vintage, the mid year of three hot years, bench trials showed that the beauty of this uniquely Barossa Valley creation was better expressed by altering the major variety between the three. No.1 has Grenache as the major variety, No.2 Mataro and No.3 Shiraz. $14.90 a bottle.

At glugwines we are confident the selection above shows Australian Grenache’s time has come.
